Beginner Level: Foundation Building (1-2 Years)
1. Basic Lessons (Sarali Varase)
- Introduction to swaras (Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Da, Ni)
- Sarali Varisai (set of basic exercises) in 3 speeds
- Understanding of Shruti and Laya (pitch and rhythm)
2. Janti Varase (Double Note Exercises)
- Singing two swaras in succession
- Focus on vocal clarity and strengthening voice
3. Datu Varisai (Skipping Notes)
- Practice of singing non-sequential notes
- Improvement of agility in vocal rendering
4. Alankaram (Basic Rhythmic Patterns)
- Simple alankarams in different talas (Adi, Rupaka, and
others)
- Exercises for precision in rhythm
5. Geethe (Simple Songs)
- Learning 4-5 simple Geethams
- Understanding melody and tala coordination
- Examples: Sri Gananatha Kamalajadala.
Intermediate Level: Expanding Knowledge (2-4 Years)
1. Swarajatis
- Introduction to Swarajatis, which combine swara and
lyrics
- Focus on rhythm, melody, and expression
- Learn Swarajatis in ragas like Bhairavi, Khamas
2. Varnams (Tana and Pada Varnams)
- Mastering Varnams in Adi and Ata tala (Slow and fast
speeds)
- Example: Ninnukori Vanajakshi.
- Improves voice control, gamakas (ornamentation), and
manodharma (improvisation)
3. Simple Krithis
- Introduction to Krithis by composers like Tyagaraja,
Dikshitar, Shyama Sastri
- Emphasis on lyrical interpretation and devotion
- Learn 8-10 Krithis in ragas like Hamsadhwani, Kambhoji,
Shankarabharanam, and Kharaharapriya
4. Manodharma (Basic Improvisation)
- Introduction to Kalpana Swaras (creative swara singing)
- Basic Aalapana (improvised raga singing)
- Simple Neraval (improvisation on a line from a kriti)
5. Theory
- Basics of Carnatic music theory: Ragas, talas, and
compositions
- Understanding Melakarta ragas and their classification
Advanced Level: Mastery and Manodharma (4+ Years)
1. Advanced Varnams
- Mastery of complex Varnams with intricate gamakas
- Practice Varnams in rare ragas and Ata talam.
2. Advanced Krithis
- Learning masterpieces of composers with complex
structures
- Example: Endaro Mahanubhavulu (Sri), Sri Subrahmanya
(Kamboji)
- Emphasis on bhava (expression), intricate gamakas, and
complex rhythmic structures
3. Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi (RTP)
- In-depth practice of RTP, a hallmark of Carnatic
concerts
- Comprehensive Ragam (Aalapana), Tanam (rhythmic
improvisation), and Pallavi (refrain)
- Learn Pallavi in multiple ragas and talas
4. Advanced Manodharma
- Extensive practice of Kalpana Swaras in complex ragas
- Detailed Neraval and Aalapana in ragas like Kalyani,
Bhairavi, Thodi, Kambhoji
- Improvisation in Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi
5. Javalis and Tillanas
- Learn Javalis (light classical pieces) and Tillanas
(rhythmic compositions)
- Examples: Smarajanaka (Behag), Dhanashree Thillana (Swati
Tirunal)
6. Thodi, Bhairavi, Kalyani, Shankarabharanam Mastery
- In-depth study of the most significant Carnatic ragas
- Full krithis, aalapanas, and swaraprastharas (kalpana
swaras)
7. Concert Preparation
- Preparation for full-length Carnatic concerts (1.5 to 2
hours)
- Structured learning of concert sequences: Varnam, Krithis,
RTP, Thillana
Theory (Advanced)
- Advanced ragas and talas, complex rhythm patterns
(Nadais)
- Composers and their styles, history of Carnatic music
Supplemental Practices:
- Voice culture exercises to enhance vocal stamina and
clarity
- Listening to concert recordings of great artists like MS
Subbulakshmi, Balamuralikrishna, and others
- Participation in concerts and performances for real-time
learning
